Sapphire Leech makes every blue spell your opponents cast cost one more mana — a persistent, symmetrical tax that punishes blue-heavy tables more than it punishes you if you're not running blue yourself. The catch is the upkeep cost: skip paying blue mana and it eats itself, so it belongs in decks that can reliably produce blue each turn or abuse the sacrifice.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Sapphire Leech earns a niche in non-blue or artifact-based stax shells where the symmetry is one-sided in practice — taxing a table full of blue mages while you operate on green or red mana is a real advantage. Legacy and Vintage are the only other formats where it's legal, and it sees no meaningful play there; the formats are fast enough that a one-mana tax on a fragile 2/2 doesn't move the needle. Commander is the only context where Sapphire Leech is worth discussing at all, and even there it's a role-player rather than a staple.

Current price
$0.30 bulk tier
At $0.30, Sapphire Leech is deep bulk — easy to pick up, easy to forget. It won't appreciate; demand is too narrow and supply too abundant for the price to move in any meaningful direction.
