Sanguine Praetor threatens to wipe an entire creature type off the board the moment it connects, making it one of the most punishing combat threats black can offer. Eight mana is a real ask, but a single attack that names the right type can end games on the spot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Sanguine Praetor is essentially a Commander card — the format's longer games give it room to come down, attack once, and devastate a table that's leaned on a dominant creature type. In Legacy and Vintage, eight mana is a non-starter; those formats kill you before you untap with it, and the trigger requires combat damage that faster decks will never let happen. Commander is where the math changes: a single swing naming Humans, Elves, or Zombies can sacrifice dozens of creatures across three opponents simultaneously, turning one attack into a field-clearing win condition. Oathbreaker is technically legal but shares enough of Legacy's speed problem that Sanguine Praetor rarely earns its slot there.

Pricing data for Sanguine Praetor isn't currently available in this snapshot, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for a live number. As a high-CMC, niche-but-spectacular black mythic, it tends to trade at a modest price relative to its power ceiling — worth picking up if you're building the right commander shell.
