Sand Golem is a five-mana 3/3 that enters tapped and can't attack on the first turn it's under your control — a punishing amount of setup cost for a body that trades with a 3/3 token. Unless your deck has a specific reason to care about Golems or artifact creatures, Sand Golem is outclassed by virtually every other five-drop in Commander.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Sand Golem is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but legal doesn't mean playable. In Commander, a 3/3 for five with a built-in attack delay is below the floor — you need either a relevant creature type, a combo role, or a repeatable effect to justify that slot, and Sand Golem offers none of those. Legacy and Vintage have access to efficient threats at every point on the curve, so Sand Golem never competes. Oathbreaker operates at a faster, more focused pace than Commander, which makes the tempo loss on entry even harder to absorb.

Price Context
Current price
$0.22 bulk tier
At $0.22, Sand Golem is deep bulk — the price of a card nobody is seeking out. Bulk commons and uncommons with no competitive or Commander demand don't trend up, so there's no financial case to hold copies.
