Sailmonger lets you pay life to give creatures flying until end of turn — a narrow, reactive effect that rarely changes a game's outcome. The cost in both mana and life rarely pays off when dedicated evasion enablers do the job permanently for the same price.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Sailmonger is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no play in any of them. In Commander, temporary flying is a weak effect — you want evasion that sticks, and Sailmonger's activation requires mana and life every time you need it. Legacy and Vintage have no interest in a three-mana 1/1 that taxes you to grant temporary flying. Oathbreaker shares Commander's verdict: the effect is too conditional and too short-lived to earn a slot.

Price Context
Current price
$0.27 bulk tier
At $0.27, Sailmonger is deep bulk — the price reflects the demand, which is close to zero. Don't expect that to change; the effect hasn't found a home in over two decades and nothing on the horizon makes it more appealing.
