In Commander, Run Afoul fills the niche of a one-mana instant that answers the most dangerous flying threat at the table without requiring green to be your primary removal color — it earns a slot in decks that are otherwise light on spot removal and can't afford to let an evasive threat connect. Competitive formats like Legacy and Vintage rarely want it because faster interaction and broader removal exist at the same cost, and the flying restriction is genuinely punishing against grounded strategies. Pauper is the one non-Commander format where Run Afoul sees situational play, since faeries and tempo decks make flying the dominant threat class. Pioneer and Modern don't have the density of must-kill fliers at sorcery-relevant tables to justify the slot restriction.
