Rotting Mastodon puts an 8/8 body on the board for four mana — the catch is a enters-the-battlefield debuff that drops your team to 0 power until end of turn. That downside is either irrelevant or the whole point, depending on what you're building around.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Rotting Mastodon is a bulk rare in every format it's legal in, and that status is deserved everywhere except narrow combo contexts. In Commander, the 8/8 stat line draws attention only in decks that want zero-power creatures — think Doran, the Siege Tower or Phenax, God of Deception, where the debuff either doesn't matter or the body does the work on defense. In Pauper it's not legal at rare, and in competitive eternal formats like Legacy and Modern, four mana for a vanilla-adjacent creature with a drawback doesn't register. The card exists for one specific niche and is unplayable outside it.

$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, Rotting Mastodon is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not the card. Bulk commons and rares don't hold value, but at this price there's nothing to lose picking up a copy if the synergy applies to your deck.
