Root-Kin Ally enters as a 4/4 for five mana, then taps your other creatures to pump itself — payoff scales directly with how wide your board is. It's a niche card that asks a lot of setup for a single beater, and most token decks have better ways to close games.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Root-Kin Ally is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees essentially zero competitive play in any 60-card format — five mana for a vanilla-sized creature with a tap-down activation is too slow. Commander is the only real home, and even there Root-Kin Ally competes with a deep pool of finishers that don't ask you to tap down your entire board to get value. It's a reasonable budget option in go-wide token decks that need a mana sink, but it's firmly a fringe inclusion.

Price Context
Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Root-Kin Ally is deep bulk — you can pick up a copy for almost nothing. Don't expect that to change; low demand and wide availability keep it at the floor.
