Rites of Reaping puts two +1/+1 counters on one creature and shrinks an opponent's creature by -1/-1 — six mana for a split effect that rarely changes the board enough to matter. At that cost, you need both halves to be relevant the turn you cast it, and in most games at least one half will be wasted.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Rites of Reaping is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive constructed formats will never touch a six-mana sorcery with this modest an effect. Commander is the only realistic home, and even there it sits on the fringe — six mana buys Cultivate plus a removal spell, or a draw engine, or any number of things that do more. Rites of Reaping makes the cut only in dedicated counter-synergy builds where both halves pull weight on the same board state.
