Rite of Ruin wipes the board three times over — artifacts, creatures, and lands — and lets you choose who sacrifices how many of each. The eight-mana price tag is real, but so is the finality: no other single spell resets the game this completely.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Rite of Ruin is a Commander card through and through — the political sacrifice sequencing only matters when there are three opponents to pressure, and the eight-mana cost is survivable in a format with Sol Ring and Cultivate. In Legacy and Vintage, it's technically legal but irrelevant; no competitive shell wants an eight-mana sorcery when Wrenn and Six and Force of Will are on the table. Oathbreaker shares enough of Commander's multiplayer structure that Rite of Ruin can find a home there too, though the 20-life format means games end faster and the window to cast it is narrower.

Price Context
Current price
$0.16 bulk tier
At $0.16, Rite of Ruin is deep bulk — you're picking it out of a dollar box, not tracking it on a buylist. Unique effects at this price rarely spike unless a commander breaks them wide open, and nothing in the current meta is doing that.
