Riptide Pilferer card art
Riptide Pilferer forces a discard every time it connects — repeatable hand disruption stapled to a two-mana body is a real threat in any blue deck that can make it unblockable. Missy makes Riptide Pilferer redundant at that role, but outside of that pairing, this is a quietly punishing card that rewards evasion enablers.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

In Commander, Riptide Pilferer is a niche but functional piece in discard-matters or evasion-tribal builds — three opponents means three hands to chip away at, and if you can guarantee it connects every turn, the cumulative pressure is real. In Legacy and Vintage, it doesn't compete: one discard trigger per combat is too slow against formats that win on turns one through three, and there are far more efficient discard spells available. Modern has the same problem — Riptide Pilferer demands attack steps in a format that doesn't give them. Oathbreaker is its second-best home, where the lower starting hand sizes make each forced discard sting more and evasion enablers in the command zone can make it consistently threatening.

Price Context

Current price

$0.17 bulk tier

At $0.17, Riptide Pilferer is firmly bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card with a real effect in the right shell. Bulk rares rarely climb without a breakout Commander printing or tournament relevance, neither of which is on the horizon here, so treat it as a cheap pickup for themed decks rather than a hold.
