Riptide Chronologist untaps all permanents you control for six mana — a full reset on lands, mana rocks, and tap-to-activate creatures at instant speed. That's a powerful ceiling, but six mana for a sorcery-speed creature that does nothing until you pay again is a steep ask outside dedicated untap shells.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Riptide Chronologist is realistically played, and even there it belongs to a narrow tier of decks. Untapping every permanent you control is strongest in engines built around Seedborn Muse-style value or in combo shells that need one more untap trigger to go infinite — think Derevi, Empyrial Tactician or Yisan, the Wanderer Bard lines where repeated untaps close the game. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant; faster, cheaper untap effects exist and six mana on a creature is not a serious proposal. Oathbreaker has the same ceiling as Commander but a smaller card pool and lower average game length, which cuts against slow build-around pieces like this one.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Riptide Chronologist is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a dollar box without hesitation. Bulk mythics and rares hold value better; a narrow uncommon with one niche application has no meaningful price floor, so don't expect it to appreciate.
