Ribbons of Night drains an opponent for 4, draws you a card, and has lifelink stapled on — all on one six-mana instant. The cost is real, but in black Commander shells that care about life total or card advantage, it pulls enough weight to justify the slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Ribbons of Night is a Commander card through and through — the format's slower pace lets you reach six mana without losing the game, and multiplayer opponents mean the life-gap the drain creates actually matters. In Legacy and Vintage it's unplayable on rate; nothing that costs six and does this little survives those formats. Modern is legal but equally inhospitable — six mana for a sorcery-level effect on an instant is still too slow when the format ends on turn four. Commander is where Ribbons of Night earns its keep, specifically in black-heavy life-drain or card-advantage-hungry builds that want spells doing double duty.

Price Context
Current price
$0.15 bulk tier
At $0.15, Ribbons of Night is deep bulk — grab a copy out of any dollar bin without thinking twice. Bulk rares this narrow don't climb unless a new commander breaks the effect wide open, so don't hold extras expecting a spike.
