Rhystic Cave taps for any color — but only if no opponent pays one mana, which at a table of three opponents means it produces colorless more often than not. In Commander, that rider is a real cost, and most five-color decks have better options.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Rhystic Cave is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, the multiplayer table makes the rhystic condition a liability — at least one opponent will almost always pay the one mana to deny you the color you need, turning it into a Wastes with extra steps. In Legacy and Vintage, where opponents are singular and resources are tight, the conditional is easier to exploit, but the format's access to dual lands and fetchlands makes a shaky five-color land unnecessary. Oathbreaker's lower-power, two-player-adjacent environment is the best home for Rhystic Cave, but even there it competes with cheaper, unconditional fixing.

Price Context
Current price
$0.35 bulk tier
At $0.35, Rhystic Cave sits firmly in bulk territory, and that price reflects its playability accurately. It won't appreciate — better fixing exists at every price point, and there's no competitive context that would drive demand.
