Repulsive Mutation counters a spell and grows a creature you already control — two effects on one card, paid for by the creature's counters. The cost is real: you're spending your own resources, so this card belongs in decks that generate counters as a byproduct of their engine, not as the end goal. Zimone, Infinite Analyst does exactly that, which is why she runs it in over half her decks.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Zimone, Infinite Analyst
Zimone, Infinite Analyst generates +1/+1 counters constantly as part of her draw engine, so Repulsive Mutation is free interaction that also grows a threat — the counter cost is barely a cost at all.

Zaxara, the Exemplary
Zaxara, the Exemplary cares about X spells, and Repulsive Mutation's variable counter cost makes it a natural fit that also answers whatever your opponents are building toward.

Me, the Immortal
Me, the Immortal wants counters on creatures as a resource, and Repulsive Mutation slots in as interaction that converts those counters into a hard counter spell without going down on board presence.

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied
Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied runs a counters-matter gameplan where Repulsive Mutation's removal doubles as counter manipulation, keeping the engine fed while stopping threats.

Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood
Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood distributes counters broadly enough that Repulsive Mutation can cash in a small amount from any creature, keeping interaction available without gutting any single threat.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Repulsive Mutation is legal across every major Constructed format except Pauper, but it's a Commander card at heart. The combination of counterspell and counter-growth only pays off when you're already running a counters engine — in 60-card formats where that density is harder to assemble and the game ends faster, cheaper unconditional interaction wins out. In Commander, the multiplayer threat density justifies the conditional nature of the counter, and the counter growth has time to matter. Oathbreaker is the one other format where it earns a real look, particularly under any Simic planeswalker that generates loyalty-adjacent pressure.

Price Context
Current price
$1.02 cheap tier
At $1.02, Repulsive Mutation sits at the cheap end of viable Commander interaction — you're not making a budget compromise to run it. It holds that price point because the demand is real but narrow, so don't expect significant movement in either direction.
