Renegade Doppelganger
Creature — Shapeshifter
Whenever another creature you control enters, you may have this creature become a copy of that creature until end of turn. (If it does, it loses this ability for the rest of the turn.)

Renegade Doppelganger turns every creature you play into a temporary second copy of itself for a turn — the payoff is real, and a two-mana 0/1 base body is all you pay for it. It shines brightest when you're copying enter-the-battlefield monsters or creatures with powerful attack triggers, but it's nearly useless against something like Mirror-Mad Phantasm whose value is tied to activated abilities rather than entering or attacking.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Renegade Doppelganger is a Commander card through and through — the format's singleton rule makes redundant ETB creatures hard to come by, and Renegade Doppelganger fills that gap cheaply. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but wholly outclassed; those formats have no patience for a fragile two-drop whose payoff requires additional setup. Modern is the same story — the card sees no meaningful play there because the tempo cost of a 0/1 that needs another creature to matter is too steep in a format that punishes slow starts. Commander is where the combination of low cost, flexible copying, and a long game to exploit it actually lines up.

Current price
$0.50 bulk tier
At $0.50, Renegade Doppelganger sits firmly in bulk territory — easy to pick up and easy to justify as a speculative include. Bulk rares with narrow applications rarely climb without a breakout deck or reprint scarcity, so treat this as a cheap tool rather than a card holding long-term value.
