In Commander, Ravenous Trap earns a sideboard-style slot in the main deck because graveyard strategies are ubiquitous — reanimator, dredge, and recursion engines all collapse when the yard disappears at instant speed for free. Modern and Legacy have dedicated sideboard slots for graveyard hate, and Ravenous Trap competes there against Relic of Progenitus and Rest in Peace; the conditional free cost is powerful, but exiling only one opponent's yard and requiring the trigger condition makes it less consistent than the top-tier options in those formats.
