Rancid Earth destroys a land and replaces itself — three mana for a sorcery-speed land removal spell that draws a card is the floor, not the ceiling. It's not the most efficient land destruction available, but the cantrip makes it a clean inclusion in any dedicated land destruction or land disruption strategy.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Rancid Earth is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker — and Pauper is where it's most at home, since the card pool limits access to premium land removal and the cantrip genuinely matters at common. In Commander, land destruction is politically punishing and usually not worth the table aggro unless the deck is built around it; Rancid Earth is passable in that context but rarely the first include. Legacy and Vintage have better options at every point on the curve, so it doesn't see play in either.

Price Context
Current price
$0.26 bulk tier
At $0.26, Rancid Earth is deep bulk — easy to acquire as a throw-in or bulk-bin pickup. The price is stable at that floor and unlikely to move without a major reprint or sudden Pauper meta shift.
