In Commander, Rakdos Guildmage is a niche roleplayer — the three-mana activation cost is steep in a format where threats are enormous, but infinite-mana lines make both abilities suddenly oppressive, clearing boards or stripping hands in one turn. In Legacy and Vintage it's essentially unplayable; the activation cost is laughably slow against decks operating on turn-one or turn-two kills, and better discard and removal options exist at every point on the curve. Modern is technically legal but the same logic applies — three mana per activation doesn't compete. Commander is the one home where Rakdos Guildmage finds a real purpose, specifically in shells that generate infinite or near-infinite mana and need a sink that doubles as a win condition.
