Purge the Profane makes an opponent discard two cards and lose two life for five mana — reasonable rate on paper, but five mana for reactive disruption is slow in any competitive context. It earns its slot only in dedicated drain-and-discard shells where both halves of the effect are pulling weight.

Purge the Profane is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but it realistically belongs in only two of those. In Commander it fits Orzhov or mono-black drain builds that want redundant discard triggers — think Tergrid, God of Fright or Nekusar, the Mindrazer — but five mana is a steep ask when Mind Rot effects usually top out at three. In Pauper it faces stiff competition from cheaper discard at common, so it won't see play there either. Everywhere else, the rate is simply too slow to matter.
