Pteramander

Pteramander is a Commander role-player, not a centerpiece — it fits blue spellslinger builds that are already churning through instants and sorceries, where a 5/5 flyer for one mana is a realistic turn-four threat rather than a fantasy. In Legacy and Vintage, it saw fringe play in Delver-style shells but was consistently outclassed by faster threats; the adapt condition asks you to have done a lot of work before it pays off, which is a liability in formats where games end quickly. Modern is similar — the graveyard count is achievable in spell-dense decks, but the tempo cost of waiting to adapt rarely lines up with what those decks are trying to do. Pioneer is the format where Pteramander has the most theoretical upside, paired with cantrip-heavy blue builds, though it has never broken through as a format staple.
