Pollywog Prodigy card art
Pollywog Prodigy reduces the cost of every Mutate spell you cast by one generic mana and replaces itself with a card whenever you Mutate — that's two engines on a two-mana body. Clement, the Worrywort decks run it at over 65% inclusion for good reason: it's the best Mutate support card printed.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Clement, the Worrywort

Clement, the Worrywort

65.5% of decks · synergy 0.59

Pollywog Prodigy is in 65% of Clement, the Worrywort decks because it does exactly what Clement wants — reduce the cost of Mutate spells so you're chaining them faster, and draw a card each time you do, which feeds directly into Clement's own value triggers.

02
Zinnia, Valley's Voice

Zinnia, Valley's Voice

44.6% of decks · synergy 0.40

Zinnia, Valley's Voice leans on Pollywog Prodigy because Zinnia cares about casting spells with Mutate, and the cost reduction lets you stack more triggers per turn while the card draw keeps the chain from stalling.

03
Plagon, Lord of the Beach

Plagon, Lord of the Beach

40.3% of decks · synergy 0.39

Plagon, Lord of the Beach runs Pollywog Prodigy because Plagon's entire gameplan is assembling Mutate stacks quickly, and shaving one mana off each Mutate spell is the difference between a two-creature turn and a three-creature turn.

04
Grolnok, the Omnivore

Grolnok, the Omnivore

42.7% of decks · synergy 0.36

Grolnok, the Omnivore wants Pollywog Prodigy because the Frog tribal angle overlaps cleanly — Pollywog is itself a Frog — and the cost reduction accelerates the Mutate triggers that fill Grolnok's exile zone with free spells.

05
Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

31.9% of decks · synergy 0.26

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied picks up Pollywog Prodigy for the same core reason as other Mutate commanders: cheaper Mutate spells mean more triggers per turn, and the cantrip effect means you're never short on gas when chaining onto Sab-Sunen.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is where Pollywog Prodigy lives — the Mutate mechanic only becomes an engine in a 100-card singleton format where you can stack enough Mutate spells to make the cost reduction and card draw matter. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but sees no play; the Mutate mechanic has no meaningful support outside Commander, and two-mana creatures that do nothing outside their tribal context don't compete in those formats. Oathbreaker is the one other format worth mentioning — if your planeswalker cares about creature-stacking or spell chaining, Pollywog Prodigy can slot in, but the pool of relevant Oathbreaker builds is small. Treat this as a Commander-exclusive card in practice.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

There's no direct budget replacement for what Pollywog Prodigy does — cost reduction plus card draw on a single body is a unique combination in the Mutate space. The closest workaround is splitting the effect: Auspicious Starrix handles the Mutate payoff side, and generic cost-reduction creatures cover the mana angle, but you're spending two slots to approximate one card and losing consistency in the process.

Price Context

Current price

$9.97 mid tier

At $9.97, Pollywog Prodigy sits at the high end of the mid tier for a two-mana utility creature — that price is driven entirely by its status as the best Mutate enabler in Commander, not by cross-format demand. It holds that value as long as Mutate commanders keep getting printed, which recent sets suggest will continue.
