Plaxcaster Frogling card art
Plaxcaster Frogling turns every counter you put on your board into a shroud tax, protecting your whole team for two mana apiece while sitting on a respectable 3/3 body. The cost is real — two mana per creature adds up, and tapping the Frogling means it can't attack — but in any deck that floods the board with +1/+1 counters, the protection engine more than earns its slot.

Grolnok, the Omnivore

Grolnok, the Omnivore

60.0% of decks · synergy 0.56

Grolnok, the Omnivore mills your library into the graveyard and lets you cast spells off the top, generating a wide board of creatures that all want counters on them — Plaxcaster Frogling steps in as the insurance policy that keeps that board alive through spot removal.

02
Clement, the Worrywort

Clement, the Worrywort

54.3% of decks · synergy 0.50

Clement, the Worrywort cares deeply about resolving spells and stacking counters onto creatures, and Plaxcaster Frogling translates that counter density directly into board-wide protection, making your investments much harder to answer.

03
Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

32.7% of decks · synergy 0.28

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied proliferates counters aggressively, so the Frogling's activated ability scales up naturally as creatures grow — protecting a threatening counter-laden board for just two mana each is an efficient trade.

04
Kros, Defense Contractor

Kros, Defense Contractor

20.7% of decks · synergy 0.20

Kros, Defense Contractor distributes counters as a political tool, and Plaxcaster Frogling ensures those gifted creatures — yours and sometimes others' — don't simply get picked off by removal before they do their political work.

Pir, Imaginative RascalToothy, Imaginary Friend

Pir, Imaginative Rascal // Toothy, Imaginary Friend

16.6% of decks · synergy 0.12

Pir, Imaginative Rascal // Toothy, Imaginary Friend doubles every counter that lands on your creatures, accelerating the Frogling's ability to protect a wide board and making it expensive for opponents to answer any single threat.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Plaxcaster Frogling does its best work — multiplayer games go long, removal is plentiful, and the two-mana shroud activation becomes a genuine deterrent when opponents have to weigh the cost of targeting into it. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially invisible; Simic has access to far more efficient protection pieces in those formats, and a 3/3 for three mana doesn't clear any competitive threshold. Modern is the same story — the card sees essentially no play there. Plaxcaster Frogling is a Commander card through and through, and the format rewards exactly what it does.

Price Context

Current price

$0.38 bulk tier

At $0.38, Plaxcaster Frogling is deep bulk — you can pick up a copy without thinking about it. The price reflects limited competitive demand outside Commander, but that's fine, because in the counter-heavy decks that actually want it, the effect is worth far more than the cost to acquire.
