Planar Gate card art
Planar Gate cuts the mana cost of every creature you cast by two, which is the kind of persistent discount that snowballs fast in creature-heavy Commander decks. The catch is a six-mana setup cost — but Monk Gyatso and similar value engines recover that investment within a turn or two.

Planar Gate is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but Commander is the only format where it sees real play. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more efficient cost-reduction engines, and the six-mana entry point is simply too slow for those formats' threat density. In Commander, the math flips — a six-mana artifact that shaves two off every subsequent creature quickly generates overwhelming value across a long game, especially in high-creature-count builds.
