Planar Ally puts a free mana ability on any creature you control the moment it enters — the upside is real, but a six-mana 4/4 that requires another creature already in play to do anything meaningful is a steep ask. It's a role-player in dedicated go-wide or tap-synergy shells, not a generic include.

In Commander, Planar Ally is a niche inclusion that pays off only in decks with consistent token production or dedicated tap synergies — it does nothing in a vacuum and competes with more efficient mana rocks and dorks at the same slot. In Pauper, a six-mana 4/4 with a conditional triggered ability doesn't clear the bar; the format rewards efficiency far too much for this to see play.
