Pirate's Cutlass card art
Pirate's Cutlass is a three-mana equip-two that grants +2/+0 — mediocre stats for a cost that competes with equipment that also adds evasion, protection, or enters already attached. The Pirate subtype restriction on the free equip means outside a dedicated Pirate tribal shell, this is strictly below the Equipment curve.

Pirate's Cutlass is a bulk role-player in exactly one context: Pirate tribal Commander decks helmed by commanders like Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator or Breeches, Brazen Plunderer, where the free equip trigger fires reliably and the +2/+0 pushes combat damage that matters. In every other Commander shell, better Equipment exists at the same or lower cost. Across competitive formats — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy — Pirate's Cutlass sees no meaningful play; tribal Equipment synergy isn't a viable axis at those power levels. Pauper is the one non-Commander format where tribal budget builds occasionally reach for it, but even there it's a fringe inclusion.

Price Context

Current price

$0.21 bulk tier

At $0.21, Pirate's Cutlass sits firmly in bulk territory and is unlikely to move — demand is narrow enough that supply will always outpace it. Pick it up if you're building Pirate tribal and want the free-equip trigger; there's no reason to pay more than a quarter for it.
