Phyrexian Ironworks turns any artifact into two colorless mana by sacrificing it, making it a mana engine and sacrifice outlet in one package. The catch is that the mana vanishes at end of turn, so this card rewards decks built to spend it immediately — not a good fit for casual piles that just want ramp.

In Commander, Phyrexian Ironworks earns its slot in artifact sacrifice shells — Breya, Etherium Shaper and Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle both exploit the sacrifice trigger for value while cashing in artifacts for burst mana. It's legal in Legacy and Vintage but too slow and narrow for competitive play in either format, where dedicated combo decks prefer faster lines. Modern sees it occasionally in fringe Krark-Clan Ironworks-style loops, though that archetype has largely lost its teeth. Bottom line: Phyrexian Ironworks is a Commander card through and through.
