Phyrexian Grimoire turns any two creatures in a graveyard into a card draw engine — tap it, exile two, draw one — but four mana to activate at sorcery speed means you're paying a steep tax for incremental value. It earns a slot only in decks that flood the graveyard fast enough to treat that cost as trivial.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Phyrexian Grimoire is Commander its best home by a wide margin — graveyard strategies are endemic to the format, and the long game gives you enough fuel and mana to activate repeatedly. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant; both formats move too fast for a four-mana tap ability to matter, and dedicated graveyard decks there have engines that don't ask you to exile your own resources. Outside Commander, pass without a second look.

Price Context
Current price
$0.34 bulk tier
At $0.34, Phyrexian Grimoire is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a bargain bin without a second thought. That price is likely stable; there's no spike pressure on a slow artifact draw engine, and casual demand alone won't move it.
