Pheres-Band Warchief hands every Centaur you control +1/+1 and trample while making new ones larger and faster off the bat — that's a lord, a haste enabler, and a token anthem stapled to a 3/3 vigilance body for four mana. In a dedicated Centaur tribal shell it does real work; outside of one, it does nothing.

Pheres-Band Warchief is a Commander card through and through — tribal synergies scale with the size of your board, and only a 100-card singleton format gives you enough Centaurs to make that matter. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it is technically legal but functionally unplayable; Centaur tribal has no competitive shell in any of those formats, and a four-mana 3/3 with conditional bonuses cannot justify a slot against the power level those formats demand. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: it rewards you if you've built around it and punishes you if you haven't.
