Parasitic Grasp kills a creature and gains you 2 life for two mana — clean, efficient, and mono-black legal. The life gain is minor upside, but a two-mana unconditional removal spell that replaces the life you spent to cast it earns its slot.

In Commander, Parasitic Grasp competes in a crowded field of two-mana black removal, and the life gain clause nudges it ahead of pure-rate alternatives in decks that care about life totals — aristocrats, Aetherflux Reservoir builds, or any commander that converts life into resources. In Modern and Pioneer, it's outclassed by Fatal Push and Infernal Grasp in most shells, though the life gain keeps it relevant in lifegain-matters strategies. Legacy and Vintage have access to so much efficient removal that Parasitic Grasp rarely sees play there. It's most at home in Commander, where the 40-life format makes the 2-life rider feel small but the unconditional clause feels large.

Price Context
Current price
$0.19 bulk tier
At $0.19, Parasitic Grasp is deep bulk — pick it up in any common pile without a second thought. Bulk removal spells at this price point don't appreciate, but you're not buying it to hold; you're buying it because it fills a removal slot for essentially nothing.
