Painsmith turns every artifact you cast into a +2/+0 and deathtouch rider on any creature you control until end of turn — that's a meaningful combat swing for a two-mana 1/1. In artifact-heavy Commander shells it's a cheap, repeatable threat multiplier; everywhere else it's too conditional to justify a slot.

Commander is where Painsmith does its best work, slotting into artifact-centric decks that cast multiple artifacts per turn and want to convert that volume into combat pressure.
