Open the Way puts X lands directly onto the battlefield — not into your hand, onto the field — at instant speed, and the X scales with whatever mana you can pour into it. At that rate, it's the best land-fetch spell in any deck that generates large mana sums, and Zimone, Infinite Analyst is the poster child for why.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Zimone, Infinite Analyst
Zimone, Infinite Analyst triggers off lands entering the battlefield, so Open the Way dumping several lands at once can chain directly into more card draw and more mana, turning a single spell into a cascading engine.

Rosheen, Roaring Prophet
Rosheen, Roaring Prophet generates four mana specifically for X spells, which makes Open the Way a free minimum-four-land fetch off her ability alone — a strong floor for a ramp spell.

Magus Lucea Kane
Magus Lucea Kane copies spells with X in their cost, so a copied Open the Way effectively doubles the land haul for the same mana investment, making it one of the highest-ceiling ramp spells in the deck.

Nine-Fingers Keene
Nine-Fingers Keene wants as many land types as possible on the battlefield, and Open the Way fetches any basic land types in bulk, accelerating the threshold count faster than any single-target fetch.

Primo, the Unbounded
Primo, the Unbounded wants lands entering the battlefield in volume to trigger its proliferate and counter effects, and Open the Way delivers multiple land drops in a single spell at whatever scale your mana allows.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Open the Way lives — the format's 40-life pacing and multiplayer threat environment give you time to accumulate the mana needed to make X large enough to matter, and the payoff of putting four, five, or six lands into play at once is genuinely game-warping. In Modern and Pioneer, sorcery-speed land ramp that costs more than two mana is rarely competitive, and Open the Way's power scales too slowly for those formats' 20-life clocks. Legacy and Vintage have access to faster, cheaper land engines and generally don't want to spend this much mana on ramp. Oathbreaker sits closest to Commander in philosophy, so Open the Way sees the same kind of X-spell payoff decks there. The short version: build it in Commander, ignore it everywhere else.

Price Context
Current price
$4.81 cheap tier
At $4.81, Open the Way sits at the high end of the cheap tier but is fairly priced for a scalable land-fetch spell with genuine Commander staple traction. It sees enough play in Zimone, Rosheen, and Lucea Kane builds to hold that price without much downward pressure.
