Open the Vaults card art
Open the Vaults returns every artifact and enchantment from every graveyard to the battlefield — a mass recursion effect that can refill your board and your opponents' in a single cast. The symmetry is the cost, and decks built around Codex Shredder and similar self-mill engines lean into it deliberately, while Dr. Madison Li lists run it because they reliably have more to recover than anyone else at the table.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Dr. Madison Li

Dr. Madison Li

28.6% of decks · synergy 0.27

Dr. Madison Li mills artifacts into the graveyard as a core function, so Open the Vaults turns that self-imposed discard into a full board reload — often recovering far more than any opponent can match.

02
Liberty Prime, Recharged

Liberty Prime, Recharged

28.0% of decks · synergy 0.26

Liberty Prime, Recharged runs dense artifact packages that inevitably eat removal, and Open the Vaults acts as a reset button that returns the whole destroyed pile at once.

03
Daxos the Returned

Daxos the Returned

25.6% of decks · synergy 0.25

Daxos the Returned cares about enchantments entering the battlefield, and Open the Vaults can trigger a wave of those enters-the-battlefield effects while restoring a wiped enchantment board in a single six-mana spell.

04
Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ

Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ

17.4% of decks · synergy 0.16

Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ leans on artifacts and enchantments to generate value, and Open the Vaults patches the deck's vulnerability to board wipes by pulling everything back simultaneously.

05
Ghen, Arcanum Weaver

Ghen, Arcanum Weaver

13.9% of decks · synergy 0.14

Ghen, Arcanum Weaver deliberately sacrifices enchantments for value, and Open the Vaults closes the loop by returning the entire sacrificed pile to the battlefield at end of a recovery turn.

Open the Vaults sees almost all of its competitive play in Commander, where the symmetry clause matters less because you have three opponents' graveyards to potentially gift back — and enchantment or artifact-focused decks are common enough that the blowout lines appear regularly. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially unused; six mana is too slow for those formats and the effect doesn't map onto any established combo infrastructure. Modern legality is the same story: the card has never found a home there because cheaper graveyard hate and faster clocks make a six-mana symmetrical spell untenable. Commander is the format where Open the Vaults lives, and in the right shell it's genuinely powerful.

Price Context

Current price

$0.76 bulk tier

At $0.76, Open the Vaults sits squarely in bulk territory despite being a meaningful effect in the right Commander deck. That price is stable — it's widely available, sees no competitive play outside Commander, and the supply is deep enough that it's unlikely to move unless a breakout commander pushes inclusion rates significantly higher.
