Old Flitterfang card art
Old Flitterfang enters and immediately floods the board with Rats, then keeps threatening to make more every time you discard — the on-board payoff is real and recurring. The catch is that Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar decks aside, you need a dedicated discard shell to extract full value, so it's a build-around, not a staple.

Totentanz, Swarm Piper

Totentanz, Swarm Piper

31.3% of decks · synergy 0.30

Totentanz, Swarm Piper converts non-token creatures dying into Rats, so the flood of tokens Old Flitterfang generates become fuel for the commander's own sacrifice-and-replace loop.

03
Karumonix, the Rat King

Karumonix, the Rat King

21.5% of decks · synergy 0.20

Karumonix, the Rat King wants as many Rats on the field as possible to distribute poison counters, and Old Flitterfang's enter-the-battlefield burst plus recurring discard triggers keeps that headcount growing.

04
Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm

Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm

15.5% of decks · synergy 0.14

Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm pumps the whole Rat tribe whenever one enters the graveyard from the battlefield, so the wave of tokens Old Flitterfang produces trades favorably in combat and turns each block into a stat buff for survivors.

05
Camellia, the Seedmiser

Camellia, the Seedmiser

14.4% of decks · synergy 0.13

Camellia, the Seedmiser draws a card the first time each turn you make a Food token, which doesn't overlap directly, but the Green-black discard-value builds she enables give Old Flitterfang a discard outlet and board presence in the same shell.

In Commander, Old Flitterfang is a tribe-specific role-player — it shows up in Rat decks and discard-matters builds, not as a generalist. Competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer have no interest in it; the rate is far too slow for those environments, and dedicated token or discard payoffs with better efficiency crowd it out entirely. Standard is the one format where its ceiling rises slightly, since the card pool is shallow enough that a three-mana token producer with a recurring ability can punch above its weight in limited environments. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for anything short of the most degenerate Rat synergies. Old Flitterfang's real home is always going to be the 99 of a Commander deck built around the triggers it enables.

Price Context

Current price

$0.34 bulk tier

At $0.34, Old Flitterfang is deep bulk — you're picking it up as a throw-in or out of a bulk bin, not tracking it on a market. Tribal staples at this price tier rarely spike unless a high-profile commander printing pushes the archetype into the spotlight, so treat it as a cheap role-player and nothing more.
