Obelisk of Grixis taps for one black, blue, or red mana — strictly a color-fixer, nothing more. Three mana to deploy an artifact that produces one mana of any of your three colors is a bad rate in 2024, and nearly every competitive Grixis deck has cheaper or more flexible options.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Obelisk of Grixis sees essentially no competitive play in any format where better mana exists. In Commander, Grixis decks have access to Arcane Signet, Talisman of Creativity, Talisman of Dominance, and Talisman of Indulgence — all cheaper or faster than a three-mana do-nothing artifact. In Pauper, where the card is technically legal, the format's aggressive pace makes a three-mana ramp piece a liability. Legacy and Vintage have zero interest in it. The only context where Obelisk of Grixis is defensible is a strict budget Commander build where every other two-mana fixer is already spoken for.

$0.27 bulk tier
At $0.27, Obelisk of Grixis is deep bulk — cheap to acquire, cheap to ignore. The price reflects the demand accurately: there's no spike risk here, and picking one up costs almost nothing if you truly need a final color-fixing slot.
