Nine-Ringed Bo exiles a Spirit or Kokusho it destroys, which matters for recursion-heavy tables — but it costs five mana and only hits those two creature types. Too narrow and too slow for most Commander lists.

In Commander, Nine-Ringed Bo is a niche answer to Spirit tribal and Kokusho, the Evening Star loops, and even then five mana for conditional exile is a steep ask when Swords to Plowshares handles anything for one. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters — no competitive shell wants a five-mana artifact with a two-type restriction. Modern has enough clean, cheap removal that Nine-Ringed Bo never gets off the bench. It's legal in Oathbreaker too, but the same logic applies: the cost-to-effect ratio doesn't hold up in any 60- or 100-card format where better options exist.
