Nightmarish End

In Commander, Nightmarish End earns its slot in high-hand-size strategies — Reliquary Tower decks, draw-heavy black builds, or any commander that rewards keeping seven-plus cards. The drain rarely closes a game but chips life totals in a way opponents can't ignore at a crowded table. In Modern and Legacy it competes against cheaper, cleaner removal like Fatal Push and Fatal Push variants, so the drain rider doesn't justify the mana cost. Pioneer is the same story — four mana for a sorcery-speed removal effect would be the floor, and Nightmarish End is instant but not efficient enough to see competitive play. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander read: hand-size payoffs make the drain relevant.
