Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis forces the opponent with the most creatures to sacrifice one at the start of your combat — every combat, for free, just for attacking alone. Six mana for a 5/5 flier with exalted is a real rate, but that sacrifice trigger is the whole reason to run it.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis earns a slot, and even there it's niche — the sacrifice trigger shines in dedicated exalted builds or edict-themed decks helmed by a Grixis or mono-black commander. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage it's legal but six mana for a creature with no immediate board-breaking impact is unplayable in any competitive context. Oathbreaker is legal but the same problem applies at a smaller table scale. Stick to Commander, and specifically to decks that want repeatable no-target removal against token-light opponents.

$0.43 bulk tier
At $0.43, Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis is bulk — easy to pick up without a second thought. Bulk mythics with narrow applications rarely move, so don't expect the price to climb.
