Necrosavant is a 5/5 trampler that returns itself from the graveyard by sacrificing another creature — the self-recursion is the whole point. The cost is real: three black mana and a creature every time it comes back, which makes it a treadmill rather than a free engine.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Necrosavant has any real home, specifically in sacrifice-matters decks that already want creatures in the bin and on the altar. The recursion loop feeds commanders like Prossh, Skyraider of Kher or Gisa and Geralf archetypes that generate fodder cheaply enough to make the upkeep worthwhile. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant — the format's pace and the existence of far more efficient threats leave Necrosavant on the shelf. Oathbreaker is legal as well, though the same critique applies: five mana for a recursive beater is a hard sell when the format runs lean.

Price Context
Current price
$0.41 bulk tier
At $0.41, Necrosavant sits firmly in bulk territory and has for years — there's no competitive demand pulling the price up. It's a safe penny pickup if the recursion loop fits your build, but don't expect the price to move.
