Nadir Kraken card art
Nadir Kraken turns every draw beyond the first each turn into a free 1/1 Tentacle token, which compounds fast in any deck running meaningful card draw. The one-mana-per-token upkeep cost is real, but commanders like Marneus Calgar and The Watcher in the Water generate enough value off those tokens that the tax pays for itself.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
The Watcher in the Water

The Watcher in the Water

80.5% of decks · synergy 0.75

The Watcher in the Water cares deeply about the number of Tentacles you control, and Nadir Kraken is the most efficient engine for stacking them — every cantrip or loot effect in a draw-heavy blue shell translates directly into more counters on The Watcher.

02
Marneus Calgar

Marneus Calgar

53.6% of decks · synergy 0.51

Marneus Calgar draws a card whenever a nontoken creature enters, but more critically he draws cards when tokens enter too — each Tentacle that Nadir Kraken mints triggers Calgar, creating a self-sustaining draw-and-flood loop.

03
Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep

Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep

53.0% of decks · synergy 0.49

Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep rewards you for casting Krakens and other sea creatures, and Nadir Kraken slots in as a cheap Kraken that keeps producing board presence throughout the game without requiring additional spell investment.

04
Ephara, God of the Polis

Ephara, God of the Polis

50.3% of decks · synergy 0.49

Ephara, God of the Polis draws a card during each upkeep in which a creature entered under your control, and Nadir Kraken's Tentacle tokens reliably trigger that condition every turn the deck draws at all.

05

Runo Stromkirk

48.4% of decks · synergy 0.47

Runo Stromkirk wants a critical mass of large sea creatures to flip and copy, and Nadir Kraken earns its slot by being a cheap Kraken that generates continuous token pressure while Runo hunts for its transform condition.

Format Analysis

oathbreaker

Nadir Kraken is a Commander staple first — the token-per-draw engine scales with the high card-draw density of 100-card singleton better than in any 60-card format. In Modern and Pioneer it competes in a space crowded with more immediately threatening three-drops and sees virtually no competitive play. Legacy and Vintage have the raw draw power to trigger it repeatedly, but neither format is interested in a 2/3 creature that asks for incremental mana investment each upkeep. Commander is where Nadir Kraken earns every inclusion.

Price Context

Current price

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Nadir Kraken is deep bulk — zero barrier to picking up copies for any blue draw deck. Bulk rares with genuine synergy in a dominant format tend to stay cheap unless a breakout deck pulls them up, and nothing on the horizon suggests Nadir Kraken is leaving this price tier soon.
