Mystic Gate card art
Mystic Gate enters untapped and produces white or blue without any setup — that's the baseline for a dual land in Commander. The cost is minimal: it only taps for colorless if you control neither a Plains nor an Island, which in any dedicated white-blue shell is essentially never a concern, making Commodore Guff and every other Azorius commander happy to slot it in.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Commodore Guff

Commodore Guff

64.6% of decks · synergy 0.52

Commodore Guff runs a tight blue-white-red mana base where every untapped dual that reliably produces white or blue on turn one matters, and Mystic Gate does exactly that. At a 64.6% inclusion rate, it's close to a default include in the archetype.

02
Satya, Aetherflux Genius

Satya, Aetherflux Genius

54.7% of decks · synergy 0.42

Satya, Aetherflux Genius needs blue and white available early to cast and protect her before the copy engine gets going, and Mystic Gate is one of the cleanest ways to guarantee both colors untapped. Over half of Satya builds run it for that consistency.

03
Ephara, God of the Polis

Ephara, God of the Polis

39.7% of decks · synergy 0.16

Ephara, God of the Polis rewards playing creatures at instant speed, which puts a premium on having blue open every turn — Mystic Gate makes that easier without costing a life or entering tapped. Nearly 40% of Ephara decks include it as a low-friction blue source.

04
Lyse Hext

Lyse Hext

39.9% of decks · synergy 0.16

Lyse Hext operates in white-blue and wants her mana base to keep pace with both colors through the early turns, and Mystic Gate delivers that without any downside in a two-color shell. It appears in roughly 40% of Lyse Hext builds for straightforward fixing.

Format Analysis

Mystic Gate is at its best in Commander, where white-blue and three-color Azorius-adjacent decks are common and the one-game singleton format makes mana consistency more punishing to neglect. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but largely displaced by the original dual lands and fetchlands, so it sees fringe play at best in those formats. Modern is where Mystic Gate has real competitive history — it was a fixture in Azorius and Esper control before the format's fetch-shock mana base became the standard, and it still sees occasional play in shells that want untapped blue-white without paying two life. Pioneer and Standard have never had access to it, and Pauper is off the table entirely given its rarity.

Price Context

Current price

$2.71 cheap tier

At $2.71, Mystic Gate sits in cheap territory for a land that enters untapped and produces two colors with no life payment. It's a staple in Azorius Commander builds with consistent demand, so this price floor is unlikely to erode — it's straightforwardly good value for what it does.
