Morgue Theft returns a creature from your graveyard to your hand for two mana at instant speed — functional, unexciting, and outclassed by nearly every other black recursion spell at the same cost. Run it only if you've already exhausted better options.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Morgue Theft sees almost no competitive play in Legacy or Vintage, where black recursion options are deeper and more efficient. In Commander, it's a fringe inclusion — the instant speed is the only real selling point, and most graveyard-focused decks have enough redundancy that they never reach for it. Pauper is the one format where the card pool is constrained enough that Morgue Theft occasionally finds a roster spot in black reanimator shells, though even there it competes with stronger common-rarity alternatives.

Price Context
Current price
$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Morgue Theft is pure bulk — you're not buying it for value, you're buying it because you need a body and the binder slot is empty. Don't expect that price to move in either direction.
