Morgue Burst returns a creature from your graveyard to hand and deals damage equal to its power to any target — two relevant effects stapled together at six mana. The cost is the problem: six mana for a sorcery-speed effect that competes with reanimation spells that put the creature directly onto the battlefield makes Morgue Burst a hard sell outside of very specific shells.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Morgue Burst finds its narrowest legitimate home in Rakdos or Grixis decks that want both a damage ping and graveyard recursion on the same card — particularly when that damage can be aimed at a player to close out a game with a high-power creature in the bin. Pauper is the format where Morgue Burst is most plausible, since the competition at six mana is weaker and the two-for-one effect has more relative weight. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, six mana at sorcery speed is simply too slow; faster and more efficient recursion and direct damage spells make Morgue Burst obsolete in every competitive context. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander — situationally usable, never optimal.

$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Morgue Burst is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a commons box rather than order. There is no meaningful price floor to speak of, and nothing about its demand trajectory suggests that changes.
