Mordenkainen's Polymorph exiles a creature you control and replaces it with the top creature from your library — a clean, instant-speed swap that can dodge removal or upgrade a token into a bomb. The cost is real: you need a creature worth sacrificing and a stacked deck to guarantee a worthwhile hit.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Mordenkainen's Polymorph does its best work, particularly in decks that generate expendable tokens and want to cheat expensive creatures into play without paying full cost. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Legacy, it's too slow and too conditional — you're at the mercy of your topdeck with no selection, which doesn't cut it when the format moves faster. Pioneer is technically legal but faces the same problem: the payoff doesn't offset the variance. Pauper is legal, but there are virtually no Pauper-legal creatures worth cheating in at this cost, making it a non-starter there too.

Price Context
Current price
$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, Mordenkainen's Polymorph is deep bulk — easy to trade for or throw into any order without a second thought. Bulk rare prices rarely move unless a card breaks into widespread competitive play, which is unlikely here, so don't expect it to rise.
