Monstrous Growth puts +4/+4 and trample on a creature at instant speed for two mana — that's a meaningful pump that can end combat or close a game on the spot. It's a solid trick, but it's still a one-shot sorcery-speed effect in disguise: the moment the creature it targets dies in response, you're down a card and two mana for nothing.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Monstrous Growth is fringe at best — one-shot pump spells rarely make the 99 because they don't generate card advantage or board presence, and a single creature dying to a blocker or removal spell turns it into a two-mana do-nothing. Pauper is the format where it has the most honest case: the common card pool is removal-light enough that a surprise +4/+4 trample can close games, and redundancy with similar effects is cheap. In Legacy and Vintage, the competition from more efficient pump and protection spells is overwhelming, so Monstrous Growth never sees serious play. Oathbreaker shares Commander's problem — spell slots are too precious for cards that don't recur or scale.

Price Context
Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Monstrous Growth is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not power. There's no supply pressure that would push this higher, so it holds its price floor and nothing more.
