Mission Briefing

Instant

Surveil 2, then choose an instant or sorcery card in your graveyard. You may cast it this turn. If that spell would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead. (To surveil 2, look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.)

Mission Briefing card art
Mission Briefing digs two cards deep and then recycles any instant or sorcery from your graveyard — all at instant speed for two mana. The surveil clause is what separates it from a plain Flashback effect, and in graveyard-matters builds helmed by Mirko, Obsessive Theorist, that incidental milling is pure upside.

Mirko, Obsessive Theorist

Mirko, Obsessive Theorist

65.9% of decks · synergy 0.63

Mirko, Obsessive Theorist mills opponents as a core win condition, and Mission Briefing's surveil 2 feeds that engine while replaying a key instant — digging toward threats and filling graveyards in the same cast.

Octavia, Living Thesis

Octavia, Living Thesis

47.2% of decks · synergy 0.44

Octavia, Living Thesis requires casting instants and sorceries to trigger her pump effect, and Mission Briefing counts twice — once on cast and once for the spell it recurs — making it an efficient double-trigger on two mana.

Neerdiv, Devious Diver

Neerdiv, Devious Diver

43.0% of decks · synergy 0.40

Neerdiv, Devious Diver cares about instants and sorceries in the graveyard, and Mission Briefing both adds cards there via surveil and recovers a key spell, functioning as both setup and payoff in the same action.

In Commander, Mission Briefing earns its slot in any blue deck that wants graveyard recursion at instant speed — the surveil 2 is genuinely relevant in a 99-card format where finding specific pieces matters. In Legacy and Vintage, it competes directly with Snapcaster Mage, and that's a competition it loses almost every time; Snapcaster leaves a body, which matters in those formats. Modern and Pioneer are the formats where Mission Briefing sees the most constructed interest outside Commander, slotting into spell-heavy decks that want redundancy on the Snapcaster effect without the premium price tag. It's not legal in Standard or Pauper, so its audience is essentially graveyard-synergy Commander decks and budget constructed lists looking for a functional analog to Snapcaster.

Price Context

Current price

$0.33 bulk tier

At $0.33, Mission Briefing is bulk — you're getting a functional Snapcaster Mage effect for less than a pack of gum, which makes it an easy include for budget graveyard builds. That price is unlikely to move significantly given the volume of printings, so buy it freely and don't expect it to appreciate.
