Mire Shade is a mana sink that trades excess black mana for +1/+1 and swampwalk until end of turn — useful in dedicated Swamp-heavy builds, irrelevant everywhere else. A 1/1 for two that needs repeated activation investment to matter is a low ceiling, and swampwalk is a conditional evasion keyword that whiffs entirely against non-black opponents.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Mire Shade is a fringe inclusion restricted to mono-black or heavy-black builds that can reliably exploit swampwalk — outside that context, you're paying mana every turn to make a small creature relevant. Legacy and Vintage see no competitive play for it; those formats move too fast for a mana-sink creature with no immediate impact. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: narrow enough that only dedicated black-mana-flood strategies want it.

Price Context
Current price
$0.17 bulk tier
At $0.17, Mire Shade is pure bulk — there's no financial barrier to trying it. Don't expect that price to move; swampwalk creatures occupy a narrow niche and demand stays low.
