Minotaur Explorer hits the board as a 3/2 for two mana — strong rate — but forces you to discard a card if an opponent controls more lands than you, which is nearly guaranteed in any multiplayer game where you're not already ahead. Run it only in decks that actively want cards in the graveyard; everywhere else, the cost is real.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Minotaur Explorer is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but the discard clause scales badly with multiplayer — in a four-player Commander pod, at least one opponent almost always has more lands, so the tax triggers every turn you don't have the most land on the table. In Legacy and Vintage it's simply outclassed; aggressive two-drops in those formats don't punish you for being behind on mana. The narrow home is Commander decks that weaponize the discard — Minotaur Explorer becomes a feature, not a bug, in shells built around Reanimator, Madness, or Looting synergies.

Price Context
Current price
$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Minotaur Explorer is deep bulk — no financial downside to picking up a copy if the shell calls for it. Demand is too narrow for the price to move meaningfully in either direction.
