Sorcery

Choose a nonland card name and a number greater than 0. Target player reveals their library. If that library contains exactly the chosen number of cards with the chosen name, Mindblaze deals 8 damage to that player. Then that player shuffles.

Mindblaze card art
Mindblaze deals 8 damage to a player if you name a card and the top of their library matches — but the reveal mechanic makes it a coin flip dressed up as a spell. Eight mana for a 50/50 shot at 8 damage is not a competitive rate in any format.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Mindblaze is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but seeing play in essentially none of them. In Commander, 8 mana for conditional damage to a single player is a steep ask — the format has four opponents and much more efficient ways to close games. Legacy and Vintage have the mana acceleration to cast it earlier, but those formats demand consistency that a guessing-game sorcery cannot deliver. Modern is the most forgiving of the bunch and Mindblaze still doesn't make the cut, because burn in that format runs on precision, not chance.

Price Context

Current price

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Mindblaze sits firmly in bulk territory, and that price reflects its playability accurately. Don't expect movement — there's no emerging archetype or commander that rehabilitates a high-variance, high-cost sorcery.
