Mind Warp makes a player discard X cards at instant speed — scale X high enough and you hollow out a hand entirely. The catch is that X mana plus one black pip is a steep ask for a spell that doesn't advance your own board state.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Mind Warp sees the most play, and even there it sits on the fringe — hand disruption loses value in a four-player pod where the other three opponents refill the threat you just cleared. Legacy and Vintage have it legal but ignore it entirely; Thoughtseize and Force of Will handle discard and countermagic at a fraction of the mana. Outside of a dedicated discard strategy helmed by something like Tinybones, Trinket Thief, Mind Warp is outclassed by cheaper, more targeted options in every format it can legally enter.

Price Context
Current price
$0.28 bulk tier
At $0.28, Mind Warp is deep bulk — you'll find it in a common box or thrown into a trade binder without a second thought. Bulk discard spells don't appreciate, and nothing about Mind Warp's power level suggests that changes.
