Memoricide names a nonland card and removes every copy from hand, graveyard, and library — it's surgical disruption that can kneecap a combo player before they ever assemble their win condition. Four mana is a real cost for a card that doesn't affect the board, so it earns its slot by answering threats no removal spell can touch.
Format Analysis

Commander is where Memoricide does its best work: naming a commander's key combo piece, a problematic enchantment, or a tutor target strips a player of an entire axis of their game plan, and the singleton format means they're not drawing a replacement. In Legacy and Vintage it sees essentially no play — formats that move on turn one or two don't have time for a four-mana sorcery that doesn't win the game on the spot. Modern is legal but the rate is too slow for a format that demands efficiency; surgical effects like Surgical Extraction exist at one mana. Memoricide is a Commander card through and through, and even there it's a deliberate choice over faster options rather than an automatic inclusion.
